Iran Khodro is the first national automaker of Iran. The company was founded in 1962 by Ahmad and Machmud Hayyami brothers. Iran Khodro dedicated on passenger cars and trucks. Line-up of passenger cars is represented by own Samand brand and Peugeot models assembled under the license.
Peykan sedan is the most common car of Iran Khodro. It was developed on the basis of British Hillman Hunter car. Its issue was started in 1967. 10 years later Hillman Hunter was bought by French Peugeot brand. Then following changes have taken the place in the structure of model. In particular, the power unit was replaced and there was a different design of the body. Peykan production was ceased in 2005 by request of the Government of Iran in connection with its inefficiency and poor environmental performance.
Since beginning of 90-ies Iran Khodro has utilized Peugeot 405 issue. In the future it has expanded the list of available grades, as well as new versions of the sedan appeared. In 1997 Iran Khodro branched out into Peugeot 1600 RD, a year later Peugeot 405 station wagon appeared and in 1999 was started production of another Peugeot Pars sedan. In 2001 Iran Khodro began issue of popular Peugeot 206 hatchback, in 2002 Peugeot GL was added and since 2006 Peugeot 206 SD are assembled in Iran.
In 2000 Iran Khodro issued pilot series of cars under its own Samand brand. Four-door car was designed on the basis of Peugeot 405 units and differed from its "donor" in appearance and grade. Volume production of Iranian car was launched two years later. By now Samand assembled in Azerbaijan, Syria and Venezuela.
